It was a spectacular four-goal effort by Dawson Leedahl, but in the end, a penalty in triple overtime cost the Pats game 4.
Connor Hobbs took a swipe at a player with his broken stick and was called for tripping eight minutes into the sixth period of play. Broncos captain Glenn Gawdin made no mistake, burying the puck behind Tyler Brown with just six seconds left in the powerplay.
The final score after close to 110 minutes of play was 5-4.
To call the game exciting would almost be an understatement. The momentum between the two teams swung back and forth wildly as the Pats pushed to tie the series up at two games apiece, and the Broncos worked to get the 3-1 edge on the Pats.
Leedahl started the scoring with his first goal of the night halfway through the first period, following it up with another about five minutes later to give the Pats a comfortable two-goal lead heading into the first intermission.
However, after the break, the Broncos responded. Ryley Lindgren beat Tyler Brown for the Broncos first goal of the game and was followed up in the dying seconds of the period by Artyom Minulin.
The Pats and Broncos went into the third period all tied up at two.
Dawson Leedahl came back in the third period to give the Pats the lead once more, earning his seventh goal in the playoffs and a hat trick.
The lead lasted a mere two minutes before Tyler Steenbergen even things up again for Swift Current.
As the minutes ticked down in the third period, Lindgren struck again scoring his eighth goal of the playoffs and second of the night to put the Broncos up 4-3.
The Pats pulled Brown from between the pipes and went on the offensive and for the fourth time Tuesday evening, it was Leedahl who delivered. With just 21 seconds he scored his fourth goal of the night, and eighth of the playoffs to trigger the marathon overtime.
The Pats and Broncos played two more full periods before Gawdin scored in third OT.
For the second straight game, Regina was without captain Adam Brooks and forward Filip Ahl, two of the Pats most formidable offensive weapons. The timetable on their returns is still unknown.
The Pats now face elimination as they return home to Regina for game five on Friday.
