A 24-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a death and a stabbing, both of which occurred Friday on Red Earth Cree Nation.
Carrot River RCMP responded to a complaint of a stabbing shortly after midnight Dec. 10. An injured man was taken from a home on Red Earth to Nipawin hospital. He was treated by hospital staff and released.
While responding to the initial call, RCMP officers were called to a second Red Earth home where they found an unresponsive man, later identified as Ramsey Whitehead, 29. RCMP and EMS staff tried to give Whitehead first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday in Saskatoon.
Davis Demery Lester Whitehead, 24, was arrested in connection with the two incidents. He was charged with first-degree murder, as well as aggravated assault. Whitehead was remanded into custody, and is scheduled to make his first appearance tomorrow morning in Melfort Provincial Court.
RCMP said their investigation into the death is ongoing, and currently includes the Office of the Chief Coroner, Tisdale Forensic Identification Services and several RCMP detachments.
