Drivers will soon need to slow down when driving through Saskatoon’s west side.
On Monday, the city’s transportation committee backed a proposal to lower the speed limit from 50 kilometres to 40 kilometres per hour in Montgomery Place.
“The reason being for that; there are no sidewalks out there,” Mayor Don Atchison told the Brent Loucks Show Tuesday.
The committee heard the portion of 11th Street west from Crescent Boulevard will be 50 km/h; east of Crescent Boulevard will be 40 km/h.
Speed limits have been a polarizing topic in Edmonton, Alta. where a campaign was launched recently to reduce limits in residential areas.
“We’ll try this out in Montgomery and see how it goes,” Atchison said when asked if a lower speed limit could be expanded to other neighbourhoods in Saskatoon.
A city report noted building sidewalks in Montgomery would cost more than $100,000.
The proposed speed limit still needs to be approved by council before it is implemented.
