Saskatoon’s Amazing Stories could soon be crowned top-shop in the world in what are known as the Oscars of the comic book scene.
The 8th Street comic store is nominated for the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award. The award is handed out annually at the San Diego Comic Convention.
“It means a lot because there are hundreds if not thousands of different comic book shops around North American and the world… to be in the top 20 is pretty spectacular,” co-owner Jeff Kocur said.
Since 1993, one store has been recognized for the role it plays in its community and for its ability to nurture the relationship between creators and readers.
Kocur said they have put a lot of work into connecting with the community including signing events, a local books section and their in-house Punch magazine.
“Amazing Stories have always supported local art and artists,” Kocur said. “I think the community should be proud because essentially we can’t do it without them.”
The shop has been in business for 23 years and won last year’s Harry Kremer Award for Best Comics Retailer in Canada (http://ckom.com/article/193425/two-sask-comic-book-stores-finalists-retail-award) as part of the Joe Shuster awards.
“We thought that winning Best in Canada might get their attention,” Kocur said.
The Eisner winners will be announced at San Diego Comic-Con on July 22. Kocur said two staff members are going to the convention and will be able to accept the award if they win.
