The City of Regina is hoping you won’t think its new garbage cans are trash.
The newer subdivisions and households needing a replacement now get a smaller 240-litre rollout bin.
That’s because the city is hoping you’ll recycle more and throw out less.
The blue recycle bins are the larger 360-litre size.
The folks at city hall take garbage reduction so seriously they even have a team of people who work with households to, essentially, assess their trash.
“Our team does a needs assessment with them to sort of walk them through what garbage are they generating and are they recycling everything they can,” Janet Aird, the city’s manager of waste diversion services explained. “If they still feel they really can’t make the 240 work for them we will redeploy a 360 litre.”
Aird maintains the garbage generated by Regina households is reducing. In fact, on average only about 70 per cent of the 360-litre rollout can is filled each week.
That 30 per cent of unused garbage can is about the difference in size between the current larger bin used and the smaller bin now being provided.
“We want to get to that level of waste reduction overall,” Aird maintained.
About 750 households in Regina now use the 240-litre rollout bin.
