The first boats carrying migrants being deported from Greece under a contentious plan to stem illegal migration into Europe landed in Turkey Monday.
Three boats carrying 202 people departed in the early hours of the morning from the Greek islands of Lesbos and Chios.
The migrants arrived at the port of Dikili and were escorted to shore by Turkish police.
According to Greek authorities, the majority of the migrants were from Pakistan. Others were from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India, while two Syrians returned voluntarily.
They’re the first to be deported under the European Union’s contentious one for one deal struck on March 20.
Under the deal, for each illegal migrant returned to Turkey, the EU takes one back and gives Turkey billions in funding.
