Former Roughriders receiver Taj Smith will not go to trial, his charges of aggravated assault have been stayed.
On Thursday at Regina Court of Queen’s Bench, the Crown prosecutor asked the judge for a stay of proceedings in the case. The judge agreed.
The initial assault charges date back to an altercation outside a Dewdney Avenue nightclub in August 2013.
Charges against two other former players including Dwight Anderson and Eron Riley were dropped early in the proceedings.
Smith was supposed to go to trial in December 2015, but the trial date was pushed back by lawyers who said they needed more time to prepare.
A stayed charge can be brought back within a year, but it’s rare.
Smith was released by the Riders in December after playing only three games in the 2015 season.
