A Saskatoon police officer was sent to hospital Monday night after a lengthy scuffle with a fleeing suspect.
It started just after 9 p.m. near Avenue P South and 11th Street in the city’s West Industrial District. Police said they spotted a suspicious vehicle and started chasing it. They found out the vehicle had been stolen from Kindersley.
Police said the suspect stopped the car and tried to run on foot. He jumped a fence and made his way to the front of a business on the 600 block of Avenue O South. At that point, he started fighting with a pursuing officer. The officer tried to taze the suspect, but was unsuccessful.
After several minutes, a passerby helped the officer until backup arrived.
Police are reminding the public not to interfere in a case like this, but are extending their thanks to the passerby.
The officer was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The 24-year-old suspect faces charges including flight, assaulting a police officer causing bodily harm, carrying a concealed weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and possession of stolen property over $5,000. He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for being unlawfully at large.
The man will be in court again Thursday morning.
