Saskatoon firefighters are among those battling the flames in northern Saskatchewan.
Captain Bruce Siemens has been helping out in La Ronge and said the situation is still very precarious.
“No matter how prepared you are, fires very aggressive, natural currents could very well prove catastrophic,” he said, referencing the massive fire in Slave Lake, Alta. in 2011.
“We drove in north to the city to provide water and five minutes later, we had to high-tail it out there. We had flames on both sides of the road. It just flared up.”
La Ronge feels like a ghost town, with only a few people left to run businesses like Co-op.
“It’s pretty well vacant. There’s some people allowed to stay, business owners that — like the Co-op supplies food and there are others that provide fuel,” he said on the Brent Loucks Show.
Siemens said there is not much more they could do in terms of manpower because they are getting a lot of help.
A fire that came close to La Ronge airport over the weekend was slowed by a bog and has since changed direction.
